The Diary situation is getting even further out of hand.  We have discussed a number of times appropriate Diary etiquette, but no one has stepped forward to enforce it.  Therefore, the Diary Police.

This will be the sole and only Diary post from the Diary Police, barring unforeseen circumstances.  All other communication will come in the form of citations posted to the Comments section of offending Diaries.  We recommend that you click the "+" next to the title of this Diary to Hotlist it for future reference.

This is not an attempt to censor people we do not like or quell legitimate discussion.  Diaries which do not violate the rules of Diary etiquette will not be cited, and, obviously, we cannot remove Diaries from the Diary page.  If anyone feels threatened by this, as you may also be by Kos's rating system, we apologize for the inconvenience.  But, as John Ashcroft might say, if you are not breaking the rules, you have nothing to fear.

Finally, every Diary will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and if there are clear extenuating circumstances (e.g., two Diarists post on the same topic within minutes of each other, unaware that the other is also posting), no citation will be issued.  We are, after all, fair.

The following is a list of Daily Kos Diary Code Violations, hereafter referred to as, simply, the Code:

Poor Judgment
§100 Posting a Diary on a subject covered by a Diary earlier that day
§105 Posting a Diary on a subject covered by a Diary entry within the last week
§110 Posting more than one or two Diaries per day
§120 Posting a Diary intended solely to inflame a faction of Daily Kos readers
§125 Posting a Diary intended to publicly shame, insult, or punish some other Daily Kos poster
§140 Posting a Diary with a misleading or otherwise inaccurate title with respect to what is in the Diary itself
§160 Posting a Diary entry which lacks analysis or discussion of the issue or sources in question [NOTE:  Despite what Instapundit may think, "Heh" is not analysis]

HTML and Formatting Violations
§200 Copying and pasting the full URL for a citation, rather than embedding a link or using TinyURL.com to create a URL of manageable size.
§220 Posting the entirety or majority of a long Diary entry in the "Intro Copy" box without using the "Extended Copy" box
§225 Posting an image, especially one that is not re-sized appropriately, in the "Intro Copy" box rather than in the "Extended Copy" box [NOTE:  soj and Rob are excepted from this part of the code]
§240 Posting a Diary without line breaks between paragraphs, making it hard to read
§250 Multiple grammar, spelling, or mechanical mistakes

Ethical and Legal Considerations
§300 Posting an entire copyrighted article in your Diary
§305 Posting an entire blog entry or news item from a candidate's website or an entire email from the candidate's campaign, especially without comment or analysis
§310 Unwarranted profanity, especially in the part of your Diary that appears on the front page
§320 Posting a Diary at dKos here so that you may repost comments from the Comments section on some other blog [NOTE:  We trust Mike S will help us identify this behavior]
§350 Other, unspecified trolling

Poll Issues
§400 Posting a Poll that has been posted previously
§410 Posting a Poll without an accompanying Diary to explain the rationale for the Poll
§420 Posting more than one "reminder" Diary per day pointing to a previously posted Poll

Note that we have left room for additions to the Code suggested by other denizens of Daily Kos.  Use the Comments section below to do so, or click through to find an email address in the "User Information" about the Diary Police.  Official additions will be codified in comments posted by us to this Diary.

We will begin issuing citations in the next 24 hours.

Please note that at other times, the Diary Police are regular users of Daily Kos who are fed up with the abuse, misuse, and other problems in the Diary section.  Kos can easily find out who we are (IP addresses, and all), and may well ask us to stop, but until he does, we will be issuing citations.

Remember:  Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

End communication.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.
Rescue this diary, and add a note:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from Rescue?
Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

You must be a member of a group to use this feature.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary?
(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?

So if Joe Diary User finds a new poll, we can't post it unless we come up with some of our own perhaps-not-so-insightful insights?

If I find a political news item of note, I'll toss it out with or without analysis. I trust the other Kosovians to create their own commentary.

hehe this is hilarious!  Whoever you really are, I must say you made me smile.  I'm sure there's about 10 people or so who actually Hotlisted this Diary hehe

On the other hand, scaring people who aren't html savvy is purely evil.  So, in other words, please don't do this again and I think you really should've added a little "fine print" at the end to disclaim that this wasn't "for real".

Diary police... you know the funny thing is after all these years working with law enforcement, you can smell a real police a mile away and you sir are not it :)

    •  Re: Diary Police (none)
The sad thing about this is that I get the feeling that the poster takes him/herself all too seriously....

There are surely good ideas here.  I'm just not sure what some sort of "Diary Police" really hopes to accomplish, given that diarists who break these rules generally get their share of abuse anyway.

Not to mention that if they really are serious, this is one reason not to take them seriously at all:

225 Posting an image, especially one that is not re-sized appropriately, in the "Intro Copy" box rather than in the "Extended Copy" box [NOTE:  soj and Rob are excepted from this part of the code]

Why would two diarists and only those two be exempted from following a rule? Seems pretty illogical to treat them any differently than the rest... are their pictures more special than everyone else's?

    Pretty strange idea.

  •  Re: Diary Police (none)
I think we need a poll on who did this...my vote's for theoria. And if it was, GET BACK TO WORK!!  If it's not, whoever you are have none the less been flattered by comparison.
